Spatial Thoughts GS Podcast Episode 3 Hi Welcome to Spatial Thoughts GIS podcast. This is Shuchi again and the 1st thing we are gonna talk about today is this interesting website called route guru ....... Story 1: This website can help us find the directions in India. i am sure everyone of us sometimes get lost and dont find the exact place where we want to reach ... so we have a easy way now rather then asking people on the road how to get to a certain place.... A company called routeguru has launched an online direction finding service. So you can log on to their website, put in your origin -destination, and you have detailed turn by turn directions. Most interestingly, these directions are refreshingly different and detailed in their approach. It uses common landmarks and street terminology to get you precise directions and these direactions are given using common landmarks and in local lingo For example, my search for directions from Delhi airport to the red fort resulted in following detailed directions... lets check out how to travel from: Domestic Airport (Palam Airport) Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi To Red Fort Lal Qila, Delhi Come towards OVERHEAD TANK in/near DOMESTIC AIRPORT (PALAM AIRPORT) Go 0.3 km Start with OVERHEAD TANK on your right side Go 0.3 km Take the 2nd left turn at the roundabout Go 0.2 km Pass by TAXI STAND on right Go 0.4 km Take the 2nd left turn at the roundabout to come onto AIRPORT ROAD towards ASMARA LINES Go 1.1 km and you get the idea right ............. amazing isn't it.. Story 2: Next we have an inspiring story from middle east. A group of speech-impaired students have carried out a GIS research project in Abu dhabi. These students analyzed the traffic problems around their institute and find why many students reach late to the campus. This project used sophisticated GIS tools like maps of the neighborhood and satellite images. It is often said that maps are a great communication tool, and these speech-impaired students have just proven that. Story 3: Animals in India are finally getting their share of technology benefits. A newly conceived zoo in Calcutta is considering detailed GIS mapping of the area to identify ideal zones for each animal. I think it's an excellent proposal. GIS will help planning the animal shelters that match their most natural habitat. This will benefit both the animals but also the public. Nothing matches the experience of watching the wild animals in their natural habitat. you agree right !!! I am gonna join you next time with some more fun news ......... till then enjoy and have a great time !!!
