Spatial Thought GIS Podcast Episode 2 Start: Hi Welcome to 2nd episode of Spatial Thoughts GIS podcast. This is Shuchi again and we have some pretty interesting stories lined up today. Let's get started with that .... so lets check out what we have today in the first story... Story 1: Guess what? Terrorists are getting high-tech in Kashmir and posing problems to the Border Security force. Kashmir is a high activity zone for terrorists and militants who sneak into the country through the hilly region of Kashmir. Now some of them have been found to be using GPS to help them navigate this tough terrain. Previously they relied on cellphone and radio communication to find their way. Army was able to intercept these and control the infiltration. Plus terrorists needed help of locals to navigate through this area. With GPS, they can find their own way and cannot be intercepted. I think the Indian Border Security Force too need to go high-tech. With changing times, people are bound to use available technology to their benefit and terrorists are no exception. I am not a military expert, but motion sensors, wireless surveillance, infrared imaging are few of the technologies that can effectively help combat the infiltration Story 2: As we all know that .... Emergency medical and police response has been non existent in India. Lot of people die each year because of lack in timely medical care. Now a few groups have started working towards this area and already made significant difference. EMRI , Emergency Management Research Institute , is currently providing state-of-the-art emergency response service in Hyderabad and many other towns around it. They use sophisticated GIS database and GPS tracking to send help to the caller. now we have a great example of location based services helping save lives and make a difference. Calling 108 by any phone will connect you to an operator, who would take down your location and dispatch police, ambulance or fire department to you immediately. Mumbai as well as the state of Gujarat are planning to ramp up their Emergency Response efforts. They can definitely learn from EMRI's technology adoption and use GIS and GPS to serve the citizens better. Story 3: lets talk about some fun now... to end today's podcast. Forget GPS gadget or GPS phones... we now have.... GPS clothing! Really, I am not kidding. We have the all-in-one GPS jacket, that has built in GPS / GPRS and other electronics. While it's fun to wear this hi-tec gizmo, some real life application might be for rescue. People travelling , skiing or hiking in hi danger zones can be tracked and rescued in case of an accident. And if you are feeling a little low-tech this monsoon, how about a GPS umbrella? This GPS enabled umbrella also has a projector built in to show off your pictures while you are walking in the rain. One more reason to go out and enjoy the rains... End: so guys, that's all we have for day and i am sure you are all enjoying listening to the spatial thoughts Podcast... if you have an interesting story that you'd like us to cover, send us an email me at shuchi@spatialthoughts.com alright so will be awaiting your comments and will meet next week for more news and fun stories ....
